Prof. Dr. José L. QUILES

José L. Quiles is professor of Physiology at the University of Granada, Granada, Spain. He develops his research work at the Biomedical Research Center and the Institute of Nutrition and Food Technology “José Mataix Verdú”.

In 1995 prof. Quiles defended his doctoral thesis, working in the group of Professor José Mataix Verdú. The thesis was rated with the highest grade and with the extraordinary doctorate prize. In 1996 he joined the military service. In 1997 he was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship that enjoyed for 24 months at the Rowett Research Institute in Aberdeen, Scotland, in the group of Prof. Klaus Wahle, working on oxidative stress and gene expression of cancer. In 1999 he was contracted as visiting teacher at the Università Politecnica delle Marche, Ancona, Italy, where I was working with Prof. Maurizio Battino. From 2012 he is full professor of physiology at the University of Granada.

Prof. Quiles’s research lines are focused on the study of aging and its associated diseases (cancer, neurodegenerative, cardiovascular) in relation to the role of diet (olive oil, strawberries, honey), redox biology and mitochondria. He has been the principal investigator of several research projects, including some funded by European Union, Spanish government or by the regional government of Andalucía. In addition, he has directed and collaborated in more than 40 projects and research contracts funded by private companies.

Prof. Quiles has been the director of 16 doctoral theses, those of the last years with international mention. He has been an invited speaker at national and international conferences: Thailand, USA, UK, Austria, Italy, China and he has been the president of the scientific committee of a national congress and member of the scientific committee of 6 international congresses. He is part of the editorial board of Food Frontiers, eFood; Ars Pharmaceutica; Diseases; Journal of Berry Research and International Journal of Molecular Sciences. Formerly, he was part of the editorial board of Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity and of Food Chemistry & Toxicology.

Throughout his career, Prof. Quiles has been awarded 10 research awards, including the Extraordinary Doctoral Thesis Prize and in the last two courses “Excellent in Knowledge” awards from Caja Rural de Granada – University of Granada to the most cited paper and to the most cited researcher, respectively, in the field of health sciences at the University of Granada.

As management positions, prof. Quiles has been Secretary of the Department of Physiology (2008-2013) and Vice Dean of Research of the Faculty of Pharmacy (2013-2017). From 2021 to 2022, he was the director of the “José Mataix Verdú” Institute of Nutrition and Food Technology (INYTA), of the University of Granada and the director of the Center for Research and Development of Functional Foods (CIDAF) of the Health Technology Park of Granada. He left these two duties to become Director of the Secretariat for Research Centers and Institutes and for the Office of Singular Projects in the Vice-Rector’s Office for Research and Knowledge Transfer at the University of Granada.
